This past week has been a busy one in our house as we officially checked everything off of our summer bucket list just in time for school to start this week. My Mom came into town on Wednesday, and we hopped in the car as soon as she pulled in the drive. We went to Prairiefire Museum to check out the dinosaur exhibit one last time before it leaves and played in the Discovery Room. After we were done there, we drove over to Scheel's which is a new sporting goods store that opened. It is huge, with a ferris wheel in the middle of it. My plan was to take Briley and Baylor on it, but Baylor refused so Briley and I did it. She thought it was great, I forgot how long it takes to load and unload. After we were finished we walked around a bit, and then it was time to go home to start dinner.
On Thursday, we got up and went to the zoo which was a first trip for both Finley and Atticus. Finley was not the biggest fan of getting up close and personal with any of the animals. She cried when she saw the polar bear, and she really got upset when an orangutan sitting at the window with its back to us, turned around and showed his teeth. Truly traumatizing for the girl. We made it through Asia and Africa, but didn't get to Australia. We walked six miles, and I think the kids were done. We did get to see the new gorilla that was born in May. Her Mom was feeding her right next to the window. When she was done, the Mom laid her down and covered her with straw so no one could look at her. She and the Dad laid on each side of the baby I guess to protect her.
On Friday, we went down to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. Our first apartment overlooked the museum, and we would walk around the gardens nightly with Lulu, but we never did go in. I really enjoyed it a lot. They have it divided off by geographical areas, and Briley has already been there so she was our tour guide. First stop had to be the Egyption area because there was a real mummy that of course terrified her brother. We then checked out Italy (very cool), America, China, Japan, and Europe. They had the Haas four season sculptures on display which I had been wanting to see. When I taught preschool, we used to have an art week, and I always did a lesson on his work because they are just fun for kids. So many ways you could go when planning activities.
Friday night was Briley's date night and it went so much better than Baylor's. She wanted to go to Powerplay which is basically like a big Chucky Cheese. She didn't want Andy and I doing anything with her because she didn't want us using her points so we watched her do the bumper cars, go karts, and then she played some games. I think Powerplay lived up to her expectations. After that we went to eat chips and dip of course at a Mexican restaurant.
Saturday was supposed to be Briley's first soccer game, but it was rained out so we went school shopping. Supplies, shoes, and an outfit are bought. I think both kids are excited to start school this week, and I am too! My Mom left after that, and we began to get things ready for Movie night.
Briley and Baylor set up their lemonade stand to sell cookies and lemonade during the show. We decided to donate the money to Noah Wilsons Bandage Project. The movie of the night was Despicable Me, and we ended up having quite a few neighbors show up.
Sunday was spent riding bicycles and going to the pool. Again, this was a first for Finley to ride on the bike with Daddy. I think she really enjoyed it a lot. Baylor fell before they even got down the street, and told us he was done. "Bicycle rides are boring," and in the house he went. The pool was pretty quiet. It is funny how the mood is shifting to school time again.
