May...Whewww!

Even beyond Briley’s graduation and our jam-packed Mother’s Day weekend, May—as always—was a whirlwind of track meets, soccer games, and end-of-school celebrations.

We kicked off the month on May Day by honoring Autumn’s memory with our annual tradition of delivering May Day baskets to our neighbors. Finley and Atticus still love this tradition, though the older two have aged out of it. That same day, Finley and Atticus also had their school field day—always a highlight filled with fun and games.

Briley’s busy April rolled right into a full May. She continued to push herself in track, especially in the mile and two-mile events. Though she’s never quite satisfied with her times, that drive is exactly what’s helped her improve so much. She and three teammates even broke the school record in the 4x800 relay—though they only ran it once due to other commitments, it’s still a badge of honor they’ll carry with pride. After much deliberation, Briley chose to focus on the two-mile at regionals, where she placed second with a new PR of 11:13—shaving nearly 15 seconds off her previous best. She qualified for State, and while it wasn’t the race she hoped for, she still ran a strong 11:19. Considering it was only her third time running the event—and that she had to wait in the heat all day—she did incredibly well. She’s sad to be leaving her teammates and her coach, Rod, but she’s beyond excited for what lies ahead at UNO this fall—and so are we. In the middle of this all, she had all of her end of Senior year events, like her awards ceremony on her last day. She also had her CNA Pinning Ceremony.  She was able to get her CNA Certification through Blue Valley’s CAPS program this semester, which gives her a big head start on clinical hours in the healthcare profession.

Baylor also had a standout track season, dropping his mile time to 5:13—nearly 40 seconds faster than last year. He had some great races against tough competition, and like Briley, he’s taken pride in his progress while staying hungry for more. He’s been training hard even after the season ended. Briley and I laugh because he often chooses to run right after a big meal—most of us would be sick, but somehow he powers through. To each their own!

May also marked a big milestone in Baylor’s faith journey: his Confirmation into the Catholic Church on May 5th. Caroline was his sponsor, and my mom, dad, and Amanda came down to celebrate. For his saint, he chose Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati—a young Italian known for his faith, charity, and love of the outdoors. He’s set to be canonized on August 3rd. Frassati believed mountain climbing brought him closer to God and encouraged others to “climb higher” in their faith. We’re so proud of Baylor and the man God is shaping him to be.

Finley had a packed month with both soccer and dance. Her soccer team won their division again, with Finley leading in goals. She’s a force on the field—scoring, assisting, and hustling back on defense. But her true passion is dance, and May was her time to shine. At her May 10th recital, she performed beautifully in four dances. Her energy on stage is unmatched, and it’s clear she’s found her joy. She’s even convinced me to let her try competitive dance next year—no idea what I’m getting into, but if it makes her happy, I’m all in.  Her big surprise came on the last day of school when she got her first phone.  To say she was super excited is an understatement.

Atticus had a quieter spring, with soccer as his main activity. His team moved up a division and had a tough season—competitive in every game but only pulling out one win. He reminds me of Briley at that age: 50% soccer star, 50% not-so-interested. Outside of soccer, he’s been living his best kid life—riding his scooter around the neighborhood, playing pickup games of basketball or football, hanging out at the school playground, or grabbing snacks at Price Chopper. I love this stage—still very much a kid, but starting to embrace a little independence.

We wrapped up May and the school year with an unforgettable experience. For Christmas, the Sedlak family surprised us with tickets to see the Savannah Bananas at Kauffman Stadium—and not just any tickets, but VIB (Very Important Banana) passes! We got to go on the field and hang out with the players for 30 minutes. We had one extra ticket, so Atticus brought his buddy Thomas, and those two were in heaven—snapping photos, collecting autographs, and even tossing a football with the players. Our seats were just a few rows off home plate, and Finley even got a foul ball from a sweet boy in the front row. The game was two hours of nonstop fun, laughter, and entertainment. We all agreed: after Banana Ball, regular baseball might never be the same—and to top it off, the Bananas won!
