Baylor takes on New York

A couple of weeks ago, we took Baylor on a trip to New York.  This has been a trip he has been so excited to go on.  We were a little nervous the week we were going because there was a lot of smoke in the city due to a wildfire in Canada.  We ended up buying an air purifier, and face masks right before we flew out.  As we began to descend into the city, you could definitely see a haze of smoke, and could smell it in the air.  It wasn't as bad as it had been the day before we got there thank goodness.

We got to our hotel, and we gave Baylor a Yankees hat.  He got a smile on his face because he had been asking to go to a game.  We got on the subway, and we were off to Yankee Stadium.  It ended up being a double header, so we went a little late to the first game, and stayed until the 7th inning of the second.  Although it is not the old Yankee Stadium, this one had a lot of character.  They had a little museum inside that had so many of the great baseball player's uniforms, bats, and balls.  It was fun to go through, and our favorite was Babe Ruth's bats.  He would put a little notch in his bat each time he had a homerun.  Baylor and Andy got fancy milkshakes, and that might be what made Baylor decide to become a Yankees fan.;). Just kidding, he will always love the Cardinals, but we all really enjoyed the game.

The next morning we were off to the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty.  We got the golden ticket to climb up the stairs to the crown.  I began to think I wasn't going to make it all the way up.  It was a lot harder than it was the last time I had done it.  I could feel the burn in my legs for the whole 377 steps up the winding staircase.  After we took in the views, we made our way back down, and on to Ellis Island.

That afternoon, we ate at Bill's Burgers, rested for a bit in our room, and then we were off again.  We went to Trinity Church where Alexander Hamilton and his family is buried, showed him the 9/11 Memorial, and Oculus before getting on the Hudson River walk to make our way to The Edge.  As we were walking, we ran into a mini putt putt course.  He wanted to play so we stopped to do that.  We also checked out the Irish Hunger Memorial.  They had stones from each county in the country.  We were able to find Kildair where the Killday family is from. We then continued on to the Little Island Park.

By then we were hungry, and it had started to rain so we stopped at Artichoke Basille's Pizza.  I've been wanting to try this place out, and their artichoke pizza was so yummy.  Baylor got a Meatball  Dough, and it ended up being huge.  After we were stuffed, we got on the High Line, and took it down to the Edge.  It rained on us off and on as we walked, but it wasn't too bad.  We got to the observatory right on time, and began the experience.  As we got to the top, they said there was lightening in the area, and everyone had to stay inside.  We waited for quite awhile, but we weren't going to leave until we got the full view.  They finally let us out, and it was very cool to see the lights of the city at night.  They had a window on the floor so that you could look down on the street below.  Made me nervous, but Baylor got right on it.  He said this was one of the best things we did on the trip.

Day three started off with the 9/11 Museum.  I told Andy that I have done that museum three times, and it still brings you right back to that day.  After we finished, we took the Subway over to Dumbo for lunch.  We ate at a really good lunch place called Jacob's Pickles.  We then took off on our walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, into Chinatown, Little Italy for an afternoon dessert, East Village to stop at Economy Candy, and then back to the hotel for a break before dinner.  Dinner was at an Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village called Da Andrea.  Briley's friend had recommended it, and it did not disappoint.

Day 4 was our last day with Andy being a part of the adventuring.  We went to mass at St. Patrick's cathedral.  Cardinal Dolan was doing the mass after us, so we missed him.  We thought about staying for the beginning of the next mass, but we were all a little hungry so we went in search of breakfast.  After we ate, we showed Baylor Grand Central Station, and then went up to the Vanderbilt Summit Observatory.  Andy and I decided this was our favorite as far as views go, but Baylor liked seeing the lights at night at the Edge.  Next, was lunch at Shake Shack in the Flat Iron District along with some shopping at the Harry Potter Store before packing up our things to switch hotels. Our next hotel was right on Time Square so we went from the nice quiet financial district to being right in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

That night we went to dinner at Ellen's Stardust.  It is one of those places that they say not to go to because it is a tourist trap, but we have had fun the two times we have gone there.  We could probably get better food elsewhere, but the staff is friendly, and it is entertaining to watch them perform.  After dinner, we took a stroll down to Central Park.

Day 5 was Baylor and I's first day on our own.  We walked down to Bryant Park and the New York Public Library.  We then continued on to Madison Square Gardens for Baylor to get a Knicks jersey.  We got a bagel sandwich for lunch, and then took the subway to the Museum of Natural History.  This is a museum that we had not ever gone to, and it was a lot of fun.  So many things to see, and Baylor was on a hunt to find all the characters from Night of the Museum.  We stopped at Lavain Bakery for their famous cookies before hopping on the subway to go back to the hotel.  That evening, he and I went to John's on Time Square for some pizza.

Day 6 was our last day in New York.  We walked through Central Park, stopped at Serendipity for a frozen hot chocolate, rode the Roosevelt Tram over to Roosevelt Island to take in the views of the city. We shopped the afternoon away.  I never thought Baylor was a shopper, but he had a lot of stores he wanted to go to like the Pele Soccer Store, MLB, NBA, Fao Schwartz, and the M&M store. That night we ate at Los Tacos, and then we went to The Met for an art festival.  It said there was free admission so I thought it would be fun to check out.  We have previously done the free nights at the Museum of Modern Art, and it always worked out well.  This was a different story, as they had all the exhibit rooms closed that you would really want to see.  I went in with my list of paintings and sculptures to see, and they were all closed off.  Such a bummer.  I guess I will have to pay admission the next time we are there to see them.

That was a wrap on our trip with Baylor.  We had so much fun spending time with him, and I think taking him this year was perfect.  With all that has been going on with me, I was so happy we were able to do it.  So many wonderful memories.  Finley is already planning her trip, and I think it might be a little different itinerary.
