We are into our final week of summer before school starts again, and I really can hardly believe it! Two weekends ago we made our way to St. Louis to celebrate Charlotte turning two, and meeting our newest niece Annie. We had looked at getting Cardinals tickets since we were going to be in town, but we couldn't find any. It was also so incredibly hot that I know we would have probably been miserable if we did go.
The kids really only cared about playing with their cousins, and so that is what they did for hours on end. We had Charlotte' s bubble birthday on Friday, and it was super cute. Finley loves a good birthday party. Briley did get her first sting by a hornet we think. It got her on her knee and ankle. She finally let us put a baking soda paste on it, and it took the sting away.
Saturday morning we ate breakfast out, and it was really good. They had German pancakes, and I have never seen them on a menu before. I make them at home so I was excited to see how theirs were. They did not disappoint. That afternoon we took the kids back to the hotel for swimming and naps, and then met everyone for dinner. We left Sunday morning and made our way back to Kansas City.
Last week I had a babysitter come over to watch Finley and Atticus while I took Briley and Baylor for a day in the city. We went on the new Kansas City Street Car through downtown, and then went to Union Station to see all the model trains, and go to Science City. I think they both had a great time exploring Science City. It is crazy, but I had never taken them there. I used to go there on field trips when I taught, and for some reason I assumed Briley had gone on one but she said she never had. We wrapped up the day with a trip to get ice cream. It was fun to get to take just the two of them on one last trip before school started.
Saturday we packed up and went to drop Briley off at kamp. She was dressed, and ready to go early that morning even though we weren't leaving until 10:00. We stopped to get lunch along the way at a place outside of Boliver that claims they had the best tenderloins. They were good, but we both decided we had had better.
We got to camp around 2:15, and met the Farwells on their way out. We talked for a minute and then headed in. Ellie was wandering around looking for us so Andy grabbed her and she stayed with us until Briley got announced. They weren't in the same cabin this year which I think is good for them to meet other people, but it is also fun for them to have a week together without parents, and siblings around. It actually kind of made me sad that we haven't seen pictures of them doing things together like we saw last year. Oh well, I'm sure they are having a blast either way. Finley really wanted to stay at camp too. She kept asking Briley's counselor where her bed was at. I can't wait to hear their stories.
This week I have really just been taking the kids to the pool. Baylor finally got up the courage to take the test to see if he could do the waterslides. He had to swim across the pool and back. He was able to do it without any problems at all which I knew he would be a able to, but it takes a long time to get up the courage to do something new for him.
Lissy came to our house on Wednesday and of course we went to the pool so Baylor could show her how he does the water slides. He is so proud of himself. Lissy did some firefly shoots that night at our house, and I can't wait to see how they turned out. They looked adorable!
Thursday morning we got up and took Lissy to the zoo. We checked out the new baby Orangutan that I just think is the cutest little thing. We also caught the koala bears awake. They sleep 20 hours a day so I was very happy to have seen them up and moving around. We only got through Australia before it was time to meet Andy for lunch. We met him at the Red Door for their fried chicken Thursday, and it was really good. They accidentally gave Lissy the Jalepeno fried chicken, and she kept drinking her water and telling us she didn't understand why we didn't think the chicken was spicy. It took us awhile to figure out what had happened. Either way I think it was pretty good, but she might have stomach issues on her way back to Kirksville today.
