Briley's birthday was on Thursday this year. I had gone to Women's night on Wednesday, and was hoping maybe she was old enough that she didn't expect the big birthday celebration the morning of her birthday, but that was untrue of course. She loves our traditions, and I suppose I will be blowing up balloons to put in her bedroom until she moves out. I got the balloons ready, hung up the banner, and made breakfast rolls for the morning before going to bed that night.
Thursday morning she was up before me, to see it all. She ate her breakfast really fast and was off for school. When I picked her up that afternoon she said it had been a great day with the lunchroom singing happy birthday to her, and her friend gave her a pair of cozy slippers. She was so excited for the slippers that she came home to take a bath, put her robe on, and slippers.
She requested pancakes for dinner so we had that, she opened her presents, blew the candles out on her cake, and then we were off to her softball game.
It is getting harder and harder to find gifts for her, but she was very excited for her hydroflask, new tennis shoes, legos, and Vineyard Vines t-shirt.
Andy stayed home on Friday, and we had 12 Cubic yards of mulch delivered for our flower beds. We worked all day on getting that ready. Finley also had a pet parade at school so I took Viva for that. She won the award for biggest dog, but I think it is just because she is in desperate need of a hair cut. There were four goldendoodles in the parade.
That night, Briley was singing at Night the Light for choir. We haven't gone to this event before, but it was pretty fun. They had food trucks, music, games for the kids, and fireworks at the end. The proceeds went to Blue Valley Education Foundation.
Saturday was a day we had to take hour by hour. It began with the Bulldog Bolt 5k as 8:00. Briley ended up finishing first in her age group, and sixth out of all females. Her time was 26:09. Andy finished at 26:13, and 21st of males. Baylor did the 1 mile, and he was in the top four to finish, but I'm not certain which place he got. I was shocked to see him coming in as fast as he was though. I think Briley and Baylor are going to be runners.
After the race, I took Atticus and Baylor to Chuck E Cheese for a birthday party for our neighbor Kate. Andy took Finley to her soccer game. We got home at noon, and Baylor quickly changed for soccer and we were off to his game.
After he was done, I picked up a cake for Briley, and then we came home so I could begin getting things ready for her party. Andy took Briley to her game, and I got everything ready at home. She got back at 5:50, took a quick shower, and guests started arriving at 6 on the dot.
This year Briley had a spa party with ten girls. Asa and Kelsey came to help out and I was thankful because it was a labor intensive party, but also so much fun! They made body scrubs to start the night. I had a few different essential oils to choose from, and then I gave them little jars to store it. Next came yoga in the basement. Kelsey just became a certified yoga instructor, and so she led the girls in a little class. It was amazing upstairs because there was silence for about 45 minutes. It was great while it lasted.
After that they came upstairs for foot soaks, and facial masks. We set up an assembly to get the baths ready with me filling the water, Kelsey putting epsom salt and oil in, and Asa and Baylor sprinkling rose petals, and then Andy would pass them around, and add hot water as needed. The girls all seemed to enjoy it a lot. After that they went outside to play ghost in the grave yard until we made them come in to get ready for bed.
Instead of gifts this year, Briley asked her friends to donate to children's mercy. Her birthday party contributed to 325.00 in donations. Such a better use of gifts than a bunch of slime laying around our house. Proud of her for deciding to do that.
Sunday morning the kids all left at 9:30, and we were off to soccer games again. Another day filled of games, and a quick visit to see some old neighbors in the old cul-de-sac. The Caton's came back to visit, and it was good to see them again. Finley was so excited to play with Lily Sunday, and again on Monday when she came to our house. It had been 1 1/2 years since they saw each other, but they took off playing like it had just been yesterday.
Such a crazy busy weekend, but that seems to be the way our lives are right now. There is a lot of dividing and conquering, and I really just plan hour by hour to get through the day. I was at book club recently and one of the women who is recently retired said she used to have a jam packed calendar for the kids, and now she never looks at it because it is empty. I can't imagine what that must feel like, but I know we will be there before we know it. I'll keep enjoying this normal busy life we have right now with maybe a few complaints thrown in.
Last little story is of Atticus. Andy was cutting Baylor's hair on Sunday evening, and Atticus wanted his done. Since Andy wouldn't do it, he took matters into his own hands. He went up to Briley's room, and got her razor out of the shower and proceeded to shave his head. I was speechless when he walked out. The only thing we could do was shave his head, and so he now wears a ball cap everywhere. Fingers are crossed that it grows out by Asa and Kelsey's wedding.
Baylor made her a ruler.
